RYA Competent Crew

RYA Competent Crew

We are disappointed by the approach some schools are taking with courses that don’t fully meet RYA standards and hidden extras that you only encounter once you are on board. Quite few expect you to eat out ashore most nights, as well as costing more it reduces the time to thoroughly cover the Syllabus We are different

rya-trainingcentreA fantastic 5 days sailing, thanks to Paul for showing us the ropes (no pun intended) and for cooking great food Alison Montague Oct 2016

Hi Everyone,

A brilliant week aboard Wild Spirit! My desk has finally stopped moving around so I’ve been able to concentrate on setting up a place to share photos. After a couple of dead-ends, I’ve created a website for us to share….

Ian
Sept 2017

What is included:
• Services of experienced RYA Instructor
• Accommodation on board Wild Spirit
• Good on board food
• Berthing Fees, Fuel
• Use of foul weather gear (oilskins)
• Use of a life jacket and all safety equipment
• RYA Log Book
• Superb marina facilities with free Car Parking and nearby train station

We run the RYA courses in accordance with the Syllabuses, in full compliance with the hours requirements and without hidden extras, it makes a great 5 holiday and we visit several different Ports plus anchor in some beautiful places. On 7 day courses we aim to cross the Channel to Alderney or Cherbourg. Most of the courses run out of Lymington Yacht Haven which adjoins the New Forest National Park.

There are no hidden extras.Plus if you have passed Day skipper theory and don’t pass Day Skipper Practical we will give you another weekend completely free together with further training and re-assessment

Competent Crew is a 5 day course starting from scratch and gets you to being a Competent Crew member. We do suggest you learn 3 knots before the course and this is because it means we get more time sailing. (For lots of people learning knots takes time, we have 8 to learn in total plus we find it best just to teach one at a time). Most people find the course great fun whilst at the same time enjoying the challenge of learning new skills. We love teaching it, but it is hard work so we don’t do back to back courses, in fact we teach less than 10 courses each a year and we do this because we enjoy sailing and teaching and want to keep it that way. We also teach other courses, cruise and run the Wild Spirit racing teams entering a range of events from inshore races to the Fastnet and Volvo Round Ireland.

Our price includes all on board food and this is much better than most school yachts. We include use of Oilskins and for competent crew we give you a RYA log book. You are welcome to bring wine to drink with Dinner when we are safely tied up for the night, but we never drink and sail. There is free parking at Lymington Yacht Haven and a train station nearby.

Wild Spirit competes in the Fastnet and has sailed round Britain and Ireland, she is fast, stable and complies with all safety requirements.

You can talk to your instructor –Paul 01823 433813, Nick 07787 945378 or email us at [email protected] before the course– we don’t have sales people and we don’t hire in casual Instructors. The link below gives the course syllabus.

Irish Rover–Leg one Troon to Dublin £375 2 Email Wild Spirit

Special Offer–We have lost a team member so as I like a minimum of 4 on board next place is half price at £190

We finish at Dun Laoghaire Marina which has a direct Bus from Dublin airport with it’s cheap flights and good for provisioning plus crew changes. (Troon is easy from Glasgow Airport). We will probably have a night sail and may take in the Isle of Man, probably Peel, or head straight down to Ireland, or go by way of Rathlin Island.
At least one Qualifying Passage for YachtMaster and good opportunities to develop Nav and passage planning skills. Not too serious but the Irish Sea can be lumpy in the wrong conditions. We can take a keen novice but more aimed at those who have sailed before. A few nights in Marinas or ports which may include being alongside harbour walls such as in the charming little harbour of PortPatrick

Cost includes all on board food, fuel, marinas, fees etc but allow for a few meals ashore to be shore.

Whilst the Bus to the airport works well a shared Taxi may also make sense. I fly out at 1455 on 31st.

Irish Rover –Leg 2–Dublin to Plymouth £395 2 Email Wild Spirit

Second leg of the Irish Rover from Dublin (Dun Laoghaire) to Plymouth.

No doubt about it, we will have some night sailing as we have a crossing to make. Depending on the weather we may run down the coast perhaps stopping at Kilmore Quay or Dunmore East before heading across towards either the Isles of Scilly or Lands End. Stops may include Falmouth, Fowey or Helford River before arriving at Plymouth. With over 250NM this is a great mile and experience builder for budding YachtMasters and Day Skippers who want to build competence.

Cost includes on board food, fuel, marinas etc. Allow for a few meals out and you need a Passport

I arrive in Dublin airport at 1715 on 2nd September If you have similar timed flights a shared taxi may make sense.
