RYA Competent Crew

RYA Competent Crew

We are disappointed by the approach some schools are taking with courses that don’t fully meet RYA standards and hidden extras that you only encounter once you are on board. Quite few expect you to eat out ashore most nights, as well as costing more it reduces the time to thoroughly cover the Syllabus We are different

rya-trainingcentreA fantastic 5 days sailing, thanks to Paul for showing us the ropes (no pun intended) and for cooking great food Alison Montague Oct 2016

What is included:
• Services of experienced RYA Instructor
• Accommodation on board Wild Spirit
• Good on board food
• Berthing Fees, Fuel
• Use of foul weather gear (oilskins)
• Use of a life jacket and all safety equipment
• RYA Log Book
• Superb marina facilities with free Car Parking and nearby train station

We run the RYA courses in accordance with the Syllabuses, in full compliance with the hours requirements and without hidden extras, it makes a great 5 holiday and we visit several different Ports plus anchor in some beautiful places. On 7 day courses we aim to cross the Channel to Alderney or Cherbourg. Most of the courses run out of Lymington Yacht Haven which adjoins the New Forest National Park.

There are no hidden extras.Plus if you have passed Day skipper theory and don’t pass Day Skipper Practical we will give you another weekend completely free together with further training and re-assessment

Competent Crew is a 5 day course starting from scratch and gets you to being a Competent Crew member. We do suggest you learn 3 knots before the course and this is because it means we get more time sailing. (For lots of people learning knots takes time, we have 8 to learn in total plus we find it best just to teach one at a time). Most people find the course great fun whilst at the same time enjoying the challenge of learning new skills. We love teaching it, but it is hard work so we don’t do back to back courses, in fact we teach less than 10 courses each a year and we do this because we enjoy sailing and teaching and want to keep it that way. We also teach other courses, cruise and run the Wild Spirit racing teams entering a range of events from inshore races to the Fastnet and Volvo Round Ireland.

Our price includes all on board food and this is much better than most school yachts. We include use of Oilskins and for competent crew we give you a RYA log book. You are welcome to bring wine to drink with Dinner when we are safely tied up for the night, but we never drink and sail. There is free parking at Lymington Yacht Haven and a train station nearby.

Wild Spirit competes in the Fastnet and has sailed round Britain and Ireland, she is fast, stable and complies with all safety requirements.

You can talk to your instructor –Paul 01823 433813, Nick 07787 945378 or email us at [email protected] before the course– we don’t have sales people and we don’t hire in casual Instructors. The link below gives the course syllabus.

Falmouth to Dublin–Milebuilder £295 0 Email Wild Spirit

Join Falmouth Sunday evening for the trip round to Dublin. We will call in to a few ports but there is one long leg with an overnight sail. Minimum of 250NM and probably 300+.
A great Milebuilder for those working towards Yachtmaster or wanting to build their experience and miles. You will be actively involved and there are Qualifying Passages for YM.
We will probably finish in Dun Laoghaire or Greystones which have easy connections with Dublin Airport.

If you want to do the Milebuilder after this (or before) you can stay on board at no extra cost.

Scottish Explorer £595 5 Email Wild Spirit

Join either Friday evening or early Saturday morning for a full week of sailing out of Troon Yacht Haven (easy from Glasgow airport)

Where we go depends on the crew, experience and weather. This is a trip for keen sailors with the opportunity to build skills, develop navigation experience and see beautiful scenery.
There may be some night sailing but unlikely to be more than one overnight trip and there will be time ashore plus a few meals out (extra cost).

Great sailing with you and the team – learned more in 2 weeks than I have in the last 5 years … Thanks !

Best,
Mike H

Wild Spirit at anchor off Taransay in Hebrides.

Fort William to Troon £225 4 Email Wild Spirit

You would need to be in Ft William –Corpach station– is next to our berth for evening of 14th June or by 0930 morning of 15th.
We sail back to Troon—easy for rail or Glasgow airport—by mid-day Weds 20th June.
That trip will be just £225 but note it is at the end of a race. If things go wrong on the race we may end up in Oban, which is really same train line, or even somewhere else. Chances of this happening are less than 10% and you can follow our race progress via free Yellow Brick tracker. If we ended up in a difficult place and you couldn’t join then we would give you £225 back but no liability for cost of travel etc.

Whilst not a formal RYA course this is excellent for those working towards Yachtmaster as we will sail through at least one complex tidal sound and either through the Crinan canal or round the Mull of Kintyre.

Dublin (Wicklow) to Troon (Glasgow) £325 4 Email Wild Spirit

This trip is after the Volvo Round Ireland race and we will store the cruising gear at Wicklow and put it back on for Sunday morning departure. Wicklow is easy for Dublin airport, just a Bus ride.

Just where we stop will depend on the weather and we will probably have one overnight passage. We will probably sail between 175 and 215NM and include at least one Qualifying passage for YachtMaster.

It is after a major race so there is the possibility that we might have to delay or even cancel due to damage. In the last 12 years we haven’t had to do this but it is a possibility. The price of the trip reflects this increased risk. if we did have to cancel we give you your money back but not costs of flights.

Potential stops include Peel on Isle of Man, Howth, Ardglass, Bangor, Glenarm, Rathlin Island, PortPatrick and Lamlash.

We should be back into Troon by Wednesday evening but it could be early Thursday so best to book flight out of Glasgow or train for Thursday late morning or afternoon. Good restaurant at Troon Yacht Haven which we may well head for on last night.

2 or 3 of our Volvo Round Ireland team will be on board
