We will probably head across to St Vaast which is a lovely little port on the Cherbourg peninsular. Cruises are weather dependent and the destination may vary to make sure the sailing is enjoyable. Other alternatives include Alderney or Cherbourg. Wild Spirit is rated to Category 1 stability for Ocean racing—enough for a trans-Atlantic but our cruises are about enjoyment not endurance. We normally have at least one good meal out which is not in the cost. We will have a maximum of 6 on board. We meet Friday evening and may sail through the night if conditions are good. We will probably do over 200 NM and several night hours

Max of 6 on board for this trip and 3 places booked by regulars so we can take a novice or 2.

Fastnet team,.

Meet Thursday evening for start on good Friady morning. good meal out in Cherbourg and return race Sunday. Allow BH Monday finish.

The Easter, Weymouth and second Cherbourg race weekends are combined events for our Fastnet and JOG teams. We do this so members of the Fastnet and JOG Wild Spirit teams can meet; this is partly a development issue and we will be competing again in the 2018 Volvo Round Ireland Race.

Possibly a couple of spare places due to family pressures at Easter.

Often a cracking race both ways. If we have the same conditions as last year then with our new sails we could do well.

Dates—Join 21st May in Bermuda finish in Falmouth Harbour Antigua by 30th May.
3 Places for full Ocean YM qualifying passage supervised by Paul Jackson, RYA YM Ocean and RYA YM Instructor.
Cost is £750 each including all food, fuel etc. You will need to submit sailing CV and be accepted as the QP includes you being in charge of a watch. You will also be able to do your Astro-Nav on this 935NM passage but will need to provide your own Sextant and be familiar with using it before we start. You will also need to bring your own forms for recording sights and if you use them (recommended) Reeds Astro-Navigation Tables. This is for experienced Yachtmasters who have already studied the YM Ocean theory and who are preparing for the final oral exam.
Partial QPs – You can also just do your Astro-Nav and gain experience on this trip then do your QP on a later trip. Cost is £500 each. Join 21st or 22nd May in Bermuda finish in Falmouth Harbour Antigua by 30th May.
The Yacht
Spirit of Juno is a Farr 65 that has raced round the World, she was built to carry up to 19 crew though we will have a maximum of 10 on board. She is a tough vessel built to withstand the Southern Ocean so if we do get a gale she is the right yacht to be on. In 2016 we were the first ‘Sea School’ yacht home in the Caribbean 600 when about 30% of the others retired.

It all depends on time and conditions (though typically we have warm easterly trade winds).

This will be our 4th Round Ireland and last time we finished 5th in class beating our friendly rivals Irish offshore sailing to be second in the Sea School Class.

Paul Jackson YMI Ocean with over 100,000NM back for his 4th Round Ireland. He skippers and Helms in Australia and Caribbean as well as European waters.
Andy Palmer has completed Fastnets, Sydney to Hobarts and many other races with Paul. An Engineer with excellent IT skills he is capable in every position on board.
Lydia Coffey, has raced on Wild Spirit and several other yachts and skippered racing teams as well. Based in Scotland. Lydia also brings some useful local knowledge of N. Ireland waters to the team.

Dublin (Wicklow) to Troon (Glasgow) £195 3 Email Wild Spirit

This trip is after the Volvo Round Ireland race and we will store the cruising gear at Wicklow and put it back on for Sunday morning departure. Wicklow is easy for Dublin airport, just a Bus ride.

Just where we stop will depend on the weather and we will probably have one overnight passage. We will probably sail between 175 and 215NM and include at least one Qualifying passage for YachtMaster.

It is after a major race so there is the possibility that we might have to delay or even cancel due to damage. In the last 12 years we haven’t had to do this but it is a possibility. The price of the trip reflects this increased risk. if we did have to cancel we give you your money back but not costs of flights.

Potential stops include Peel on Isle of Man, Howth, Ardglass, Bangor, Glenarm, Rathlin Island, PortPatrick and Lamlash.

We should be back into Troon by Wednesday evening but it could be early Thursday so best to book flight out of Glasgow or train for Thursday late morning or afternoon. Good restaurant at Troon Yacht Haven which we may well head for on last night.

Call Paul on 01823 433813 to discuss options.

Under Spinnaker in the Irish Sea.

Contact Paul to discuss options, but as an example
handover morning of Friday 13th July and return by 1600 Friday 27th would cost £3250.
There is an insurance deposit as well of £1750 returnable after the charter.
You will need to hold at least a YM Coastal Certificate or convince me of your experience. First Mate will need either minimum of RYA Day Skipper or similar experience.

I can put a skipper on for you for an extra £450 but you have to feed him or her, however this lowers the insurance excess to £1000.

Wild Spirit is coded for 10 people and sleeps 8 in reasonable comfort.
Note–you can get shorter yachts which sleep more people but think of the difference in length between a half pint glass and a pint. If you are 6 feet 4″ you can sleep on Wild Spirit without having to adopt a foetal position.
A spinnaker and outboard are included, others charge extra.
Berthing in Troon and Largs Yachthavens is included.

St Kilda and Hebrides £1450 2 Email Wild Spirit

A full fortnight of sailing and depending on weather etc we will go out to St Kilda

Will may well visit Barra and Harris plus several other Islands

Picture of us in Rodel on Harris.
Serious sailing if the weather isn’t kind so we have a 2 week trip with a view to getting a 2 day weather window so we can overnight at St Kilda. To maximise our chances we head out to the Outer Hebrides as soon as we can and this may well involve a night sail. Possibly a stop at Oban or Tobermory then on to Skye, Barra, N. Uist, Harris or, as we did last time, anchor off Taransay before heading out to St Kilda. On the way back we may take in the Monach Islands. If the weather window doesn’t appear until the second week we sail in the lee of the Outer Hebrides and wait our chance.
Serious sailing in a stunningly beautiful part of the World and great opportunity to develop sailing skills. Graham a regular is on board, he has sailed to St Kilda with Paul before. Pam, another Wild spirit regular, who has raced round the World is also on board. You don’t have to be very experienced but unless you are certain then it is not for novices.

Great for the adventurous and thos working towards RYA qualifications, expect to be fully committed team members helping with all aspects of the voyage.
Potential Qualifying passages for those building for Yachtmaster qualifiactions.

One regular who has raced round the World booked, one who has sailed there with me before on a Round Britain trip and one more experienced sailor.

Irish Rover–Leg one Troon to Dublin £375 2 Email Wild Spirit

Special Offer–We have lost a team member so as I like a minimum of 4 on board next place is half price at £190

We finish at Dun Laoghaire Marina which has a direct Bus from Dublin airport with it’s cheap flights and good for provisioning plus crew changes. (Troon is easy from Glasgow Airport). We will probably have a night sail and may take in the Isle of Man, probably Peel, or head straight down to Ireland, or go by way of Rathlin Island.
At least one Qualifying Passage for YachtMaster and good opportunities to develop Nav and passage planning skills. Not too serious but the Irish Sea can be lumpy in the wrong conditions. We can take a keen novice but more aimed at those who have sailed before. A few nights in Marinas or ports which may include being alongside harbour walls such as in the charming little harbour of PortPatrick

Cost includes all on board food, fuel, marinas, fees etc but allow for a few meals ashore to be shore.

Whilst the Bus to the airport works well a shared Taxi may also make sense. I fly out at 1455 on 31st.

Second leg of the Irish Rover from Dublin (Dun Laoghaire) to Plymouth.

No doubt about it, we will have some night sailing as we have a crossing to make. Depending on the weather we may run down the coast perhaps stopping at Kilmore Quay or Dunmore East before heading across towards either the Isles of Scilly or Lands End. Stops may include Falmouth, Fowey or Helford River before arriving at Plymouth. With over 250NM this is a great mile and experience builder for budding YachtMasters and Day Skippers who want to build competence.

Cost includes on board food, fuel, marinas etc. Allow for a few meals out and you need a Passport

I arrive in Dublin airport at 1715 on 2nd September If you have similar timed flights a shared taxi may make sense.

CARIBBEAN 600 2019 £1750 0 Email Wild Spirit

We are back, of course we would be, it is one of our favourite races.
A classic warm water race round beautiful islands in trade winds, well normally yes, but last year, like half the fleet, we had to retire due damage from sustained winds of over 40 kts. For us it was a badly ripped mainsail, others fared worse with one Catamaran capsized. One thing which the 2018 gales proved is that when the going gets rough a Farr 65 that has raced round the World and across the Southern Ocean is a good boat to be on.
For 2019 we will have brand new, stronger sails. All 4 Official Crew have considerable experience, both on Juno and other yachts. We are seeking team members to join us on Team Juno. We provide 4 days of training before the race and if you wish you can also sleep on board, which both saves the cost of accommodation plus increases familiarity with the layout. It is great if you are already an accomplished racing sailor, but you don’t need experience if you are a committed team member.
The Skipper will again be Paul Jackson back for his 6th C600. With over 100,000 NM this Ocean YachtMaster and YachtMaster Instructor plus RYA Offshore Safety Instructor has 25,000Nm of serious racing experience including having won Division in the Sydney Hobart twice, winning 3 Peaks Yacht Race and line Honours for the Lord Howe Island Race.
The First Mate will be Arran Chapman who skippered Juno for the Regattas in 2018 with considerable success including winning their Class in Antigua Sailing Week. He will be skipper for the Caribbean regattas again for next season and as well as a great sailor has good engineering skills plus a thorough knowledge of Juno. Fit and agile he will take a lead role in foredeck training and will lead one watch.
Karoline George returns as Second Mate and brings with her a wealth of experience including Fastnets, Sydney Hobarts plus C600s. Karoline was with Paul when they were knocked down in over 60 knots in a Sydney Hobart damaging the rig, despite losing 7 hours for repairs they still finished 5th out of 16 in their Division. She will lead on training for pit work plus lead the other watch.
Navigator will be Mike Honner who races his own yacht in the US and has raced both C600s plus Antigua to Bermuda on Juno. He is Navigator for Paul’s Volvo Round Ireland Team and has proved a great team member when the going gets tough.

Six of the 2017 team are already expressing interest in returning for the race. Training starts 1000 13th February and race starts Monday 18th. Originally built and MCA Coded to carry 19 to race round the World we run with a maximum of 16. Spirit of Juno has 15 good sea going berths plus others used for storage. We will run on 2 watches and, once again, aim to beat the Volvo 60s both on IRC and through the water.
The package–Accom on board from Sunday afternoon 10th Feb to Sunday morning 24th.
Training starts 1000 13th Feb. and concludes in time for the first big sponsored party on Saturday evening 16th. Race starts 18th and we normally get back in by late Thursday with sponsored prize giving party Friday evening 22nd. Cost–£1750 up to 1st December includes food during training and race, team shirts accom on board for those who want it.
WHAGS–Vic, Karoline’s husband will be back and is our social anchor-man. I anticipate that my wife, Judith, will be there for much of the time and 2 others are interested already.

We are after just one sailor to join Wild Spirit for the 2020 race, we won both Line Honours and on IRC in 2018 beating the Irish team by just 3 minutes after 400 miles. You will need to be a seriously competitive team player with sound racing background. The ability to function on very little sleep also helps, though we normally get a Steak and a couple of Pints in Whitehaven when the runners are up the hill. We are back again, of course we are, it is a brilliant race in superb surroundings on an iconic Farr 65 that has raced round the World.
For 2020 we will be berthed in a World Heritage site–Nelsons Dockyard. Training will start on the Wednesday morning and you can stay on board from Sunday evening 16th Feb until the Saturday after the race.

Staying on board saves a considerable amount as hotel rooms at this time are normally well over $100 USD per night. Juno is large and, for a racing yacht, comfortable with 15 sea going berths.

The race starts Monday 24th and we are normally back in on Thursday well in time for the prizegiving party on Friday night. Flights out from Saturday afternoon make sense with choice of BA and Virgin to Gatwick, several to US.

Nelson’s Dockyard at night.
Several regulars already signed up and Official Crew include Bruce Garrod from Paul’s Sydney to Hobart team plus Dr Shelf (Stuart Walker) and Nick Ridgway plus Peter Thorn from the Wild Spirit team who won 3 Peaks Yacht Race with Paul in 2018 taking both Daily Telegraph Cup for line honours and Barmouth Cup for IRC.
Anne-lise with extensive Clipper experience plus a Fastnet joins us as do Craig and Fiona with previous Wild Spirit and Fastnet experience.
All except 2 have sailed with Paul before.
Record holding swimmer Claire joins us for her first big race so if you are a novice you won’t be alone and with plenty of experience on board all you need is the determination to be a good team member.

As ever our objectives are to
1) Complete the race safely
2) Enjoy ourselves
3) Do as well as we can

Pic of us on way to win the 2018 race

Consistently rated as one of the top 10 adventure races in the World the 3 Peaks is a real endurance test for both runners and sailors.
Our runners are again likely to be a former World Record holder and a former UK Record holder who won King of the Mountains in 2018

Fort William to Kirkwall £795 4 Email Wild Spirit

Fort William to Kirkwall—Friday 19th June 3rd July. You can probably slep on board Thursday night as well if you wish.
Through the Caledonian Canal then up to Orkney, some cruising round Orkney then into Kirkwall.
Only 165 NM Rhumb line but the first 3 or 4 days won’t be fast as we have Locks to deal with and scenery to look at– We have done the Crinan Canal several times and know you can’t rush a Canal. The Caledonian also has some spectacular scenery but it would be good to spend 2 or 3 days sailing round Orkney before we finish.
This is after the Three Peaks Yacht Race so in the unlikely event that the weather is extremely bad it is possible we might start from Oban instead (still easy by train)

Costs for the 2 week Cruises
Starts at £795 for 2 weeks including on board food that is better than most Sea Schools
Supplements for sole occupancy of cabin (£450) and en suite cabin (£150)
What’s included?
All safety gear compliant to Royal Ocean Racing Club standards e.g. Lifejackets with position locators.
All fuel, fees, marinas and, if used, canals.
