Cherbourg Silverware

The last cross channel race of the season was JOG Cowes to Cherbourg and it turned out to be fast and furious. We lost one experienced team member to work so our team of 6 included 3 doing their first offshore race.
With a forecast of up to 20 kts from the West we set off down the Solent on the Heavy Weather Jib beating into the breeze but expecting to be able to change to the bigger No3 Genoa as soon as we passed the Needles. But the wind didn’t drop back as forecast until we neared Cherbourg so it was HW Jib all the way. When the wind did drop it did so significantly but we were so close to the finish that we didn’t change sails but instead crept over the line to take 3rd place, just 11hrs and 17 minutes after the start 78 miles away.
The return to Lymington was also a fast affair with the forecasts varying, reality was a southerly up to F7 veering a bit and dropping to 5 which saw us home in well under 10 hours.
