Sailing Report

Season to 7th July

Last weekend saw us cross the line 539 out of about 1300 for the Round the Island race, not a great result but with a bit of a scratch team and late change of skipper (Geoff was ill) we really couldn’t mix it with rapid spinnaker gybes on the south of the Island, particularly when it was again obvious that many in the race didn’t know the basic rules. We also saw several competitors cut the corner inside Bembridge ledge Cardinal. A great race as long as you treat it as a spectacle and fun, berthing at the Folly worked well and all the team enjoyed the long weekend.
We qualified easily for the Fastnet so aren’t doing the St Malo race which is renowned for teams not finishing due to lack of wind. We will however be doing the JOG race to Weymouth on July 22nd and look forward to a good social do afterwards. We picked up some silverware in this race last year and hope to do so again. There are 2 spare places at present and I hope a couple of former Wild Spirits will join us.
The Easter races to Cherbourg went well and we finished 3rd in class on the return race beating Longue Pierre on the water.
The new Kevlar number 3 is working well in most conditions though the new smaller Code Zero designed to fill the 45 degrees to 60 off the apparent wind has proved tricky to fly when there is a big swell.
Further afield several wild Spirits were on ‘Spirit of Juno’ to finish 3rd in the new Ocean Class of the Caribbean 600 and to complete the Antigua to Bermuda under CSA rules plus the return trip
The Fastnet is the big race of the season and after this we have races to Poole, in the Solent plus 2 to Cherbourg. There are nearly always places on these as the lack of annual leave/ work/ family commitments become centre stage.
2018 sees us return to Wicklow for another Volvo Round Ireland and we may do the 3 Peaks Yacht Race before that on Wild Spirit as it is 3 weeks before the VRIR. I have some interest from regulars for using WS for a week or 2 either off Ireland or up to the Hebrides as it is quite short hop.
